A Large Maple Bowl With Rings

Here’s a large Maple bowl that I turned over the summer. It is just over 13 1/4″ in diameter and almost 5″ tall, making it the largest bowl that I turned so far. It features three rings around the outside rim.

It is finished with the bee’s wax and mineral oil mixture and then buffed.

Oh, and here’s a couple of photos of the wood for this bowl mounted on the lathe:

  1. That’s one hell of a chunk of wood. I had no idea you had to start of with that size!

  2. This piece was just over 16″ in diameter so I had to start it off the bed. You can see in the photo that the edge was quite thin so by the time this was turned to a usable thickness the diameter was down to roughly the size of the finished piece. So yes, it’s a good size piece of wood, especially when it’s spinning! :)
