Maple Bowl With Textured BandJul 19, 2010

Here’s a Peyoke style Maple bowl that I turned recently that features a textured band.

The bowl is approximately 6″ in diameter and 3″ high. It is finished with EEE Cream and Shellawax and the textured band is left natural.

The texturing, in addition to giving a nice effect, gives a contrasting color that really adds to the presence of the bowl.

It has also been turned quite thin (1/8″-3/16″) which gives a visual lightness that is verified when one picks it up.

More Turned And Burned Tea LightsJul 06, 2010

Here’s a few more small turned and burned tea lights that I recently did. Like the previous ones they are approximately 2 1/2″ in diameter and 2″ tall and each of them have their own style and design.

In keeping with the style of the Peyoke series they all feature some pyrography and they are finished with EEE Cream and Shellawax. The stained areas have a coat or two of wipe-on poly on them.

Though I started out doing these only to be able to view my ideas on actual pieces they ended up being a whole lot of fun. Seems that once you get started it’s hard to stop. I ended up doing a dozen of them. :)

Here’s some closeups of these ones:

Small Turned And Burned Tea LightsJul 04, 2010

Here’s a few small tea lights that I turned recently. They are approximately 2 1/2″ in diameter and 2″ tall. Each of them have their own style and design.

Like all the other pieces in the Peyoke series they feature some pyrography and they are finished with EEE Cream and Shellawax. The stained areas have a coat or two of wipe-on poly on them.

Making these small tea lights is where I started with the Peyoke series. I found it really hard to see my ideas on pieces of scrap wood and I wanted to see them in real turned projects. Obviously, for these ‘practice pieces’ I wanted something quick and easy to do but that would give good representation of what I had in my head. The tea lights fit the bill perfectly, and in addition to being a great ‘canvas’ they ended up becoming quite a nice little project when completed. I turned a dozen of them in a short time which gave me the springboard for the larger pieces.

Here’s some more photos of these three, starting with this one:

Enclosed Burned And Textured BowlJun 28, 2010

Here’s an enclosed bowl that I recently turned, burned and textured. It features a wide textured band that is between two thin bands that were burned with a series of small dots and then stained.

Enclosed Burned And Textured Bowl

Like the Textured Maple Bowl With Burnings the natural textured band gives the bowl a different feel and also gives a contrast to the finished and stained areas.

The bowl is made of Maple and it is 5″ (12cm) in diameter and 3″ (8cm) tall and the main part of the bowl is finished with EEE Cream and Shellawax, the stained area is finished with wipe-on poly and the textured area was left natural.
